The Immigration Affairs Office (IAO) was established in 2017 in response to a growing immigrant community presenting with complex situations and language needs beyond what the Department could serve within existing resources. IAO filled a service gap to support families and connect them with allowable and available resources, thereby preventing more dire situations from emerging.
The Immigration Affairs Office is part of the Prevention and Early Intervention Division of DCDHS. IAO’s mission is to foster a safe and welcoming environment for immigrants and their families by connecting them with services that address their unique needs. IAO empowers individuals and families through initial screening of need, referral to resources, advocacy, and community engagement. As subject matter experts, IAO provides education and consultation to DCDHS social workers serving immigrant and mixed status families. In order to best serve families and provide culturally competent support, all IAO staff are bilingual (English/Spanish).
