Description
The Dane County Department of Human Services purchases limited services for persons
who are deaf or hearing impaired through Access to Independence. The services include:
information and training for consumers to obtain and manage services and the benefits
they receive, socialization opportunities, and community/provider education regarding
the needs of persons with hearing impairments.

provides information on the prevalence, causes, and research related to deafness/hearing
loss.

- Who are deaf or hard of hearing

Services
|
|
Access to Independence - The Department of Human Services contracts
with Access to Independence to provide information and training for consumers to
obtain and manage services and benefits they receive, socialization opportunities,
and community/provider education regarding the needs of persons with hearing impairments.

The Dane County Department of Human Services - STEP Unit assists adults with disabilities
in applying for Medical Assistance and Food Stamps throughout Dane County. Income
and assets are taken into account and co-pay may be required. Please call (608)
242-7400 or TTY (608) 242-7556 for more information.

There is no cost associated with services for the deaf or hard of hearing.

Access
to Independence - serves as an Independent Living Center which is a consumer-directed,
non-profit organization that provides an array of services including: peer support,
information and referral, independent living skills training, advocacy, community
education, personal care, and service coordination. Services are provided without
cost to persons who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, and have
a severe physical disability.

Laurnet Clerc National
Deaf Education Center - The Laurnet Clerc National Deaf Education Center
at Gallaudet University web site provides a wide range of resources for persons
who are deaf.
Social Security Disability - This
web site provides information on eligibility and applying for social security disability
benefits.
Supplemental Security Income - This
web site provides information on state supplemental security income benefits, as
well as, links to the federal SSI benefits information.
Vocational Rehabilitation, Wisconsin
Department of Workforce Development - The DVR web site provides information
on employment services for persons with a disability.
Wisconsin Association for the Deaf - The Wisconsin
Association for the Deaf provides a variety of information and services for the
deaf population, including newsletter, conferences, leadership programs, and more.
Wisconsin Office for the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing - This State web site provides information on services for the
deaf and hard of hearing along with links to national and state resources.
