Youth Commission

The functions of the Dane County Youth Commission are:

  • To encourage and promote youth participation in decision-making which affects them
  • To conduct youth needs assessments and surveys
  • To work with agencies and community groups in establishing priorities for youth services
  • To work with planning and funding agencies on development and allocation of funding of youth services
  • To work with agencies to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of youth programs
  • To submit reports and recommendations to the County Board and County Executive

The commission sponsors several programs for youth in Dane County:

  1. The Youth Commission is pleased to invite applications for the 2008/2009 School, Parent and Reading Connection grants. Instructions for completion and submission deadlines are included in the Request For Proposal and Protocol links below:

  2. Dane County Youth Board — This active and energetic all-youth committee helps plan countywide events that promote positive youth development, youth leadership and youth volunteerism. Current projects include planning a fall Youth Leadership Conference and an all day Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Forum and Service Day. The Youth Board is also the co-sponsor of the Spring Youth Service Day that will be held this April.

  3. Youth Assessment — Every five years the commission, in collaborate with area schools and funders, conducts a countywide assessment of students in grades 7-12. This assessment is used by schools, law enforcement, social agencies, youth groups and others to plan programs and develop policies that best serve youth in Dane County.

  4. Technical Assistance — Staff at the Youth Commission help local communities establish programs and services that promote positive youth development. Currently staff is helping several local communities establish Youth Resource Centers for middle school youth.
