Adults sometimes live or behave in ways that are unhealthy or unsafe. These behaviors may pose a danger to the individual or to others. For adults who are found to be legally incompetent and are a danger to themselves or others, the Department of Human Services is obligated to provide protection and services. For adults who are competent and act in unhealthy or unsafe ways, the Department of Human Services encourages individuals to accept services which will result in a healthier and safer day to day life for themselves and others.

The Department of Human Services has several different methods for intervening in unsafe or unhealthy situations.

Emergency Adult Protective Services

An immediate, life threatening emergency Please call 9-1-1 to request that police, fire or ambulance immediately respond to a life threatening emergency.
Mental Health Emergency Services and Suicide Prevention Please contact the 24-Hour Crisis Intervention Service at (608) 280-2600.

Adult Protective Services

The following services can be contacted Monday through Friday during normal business hours from 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.:

Elder Abuse and Adults at Risk Helpline Call the Helpline at (608) 261-9933 to report suspected abuse or neglect of older adults and at risk adults age 18 and over. These situations may involve physical, emotional, financial or sexual abuse, neglect or self neglect. The Helpline is operated by the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County.
Guardianships and Protective Placement Call the DCDHS Adult Protective Services Unit at (608) 242-6200 for information on guardianships and protective placements.
Adults with Developmental Disabilities Call the DCDHS DD Quality Assurance Office at (608) 242-6466 to report suspected abuse or neglect of adults with developmental disabilities.
