Grant Funds Available to Develop Programs to Help Seniors

Applications are now being accepted by the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County to receive funding from two grants: the Henry Leck Endowment Grant—to support peer-to-peer prevention services to help seniors cope with stressful issues like elder abuse, housing, nutrition, and alcohol and other drug abuse and the Mally Fund for Aging Education Grant—to support educational programs to benefit staff, volunteers and/or senior adults in Dane County’s aging network.

Dane County non-profit organizations, community groups, and public agencies serving senior adults aged 60 and older are invited to apply for the two grants. A total of $8,500 will be awarded for the Leck grant in 2012; agencies may apply for up to $2,000 each. Leck grants are meant to provide seed money to develop peer-to-peer prevention programs in the areas of health and wellness, AODA, elder abuse, housing, and nutrition. Programs that are considered for the grant should:

  • Include involvement and education that builds on strengths, skills, talents, knowledge, and life experience of senior adults;
  • Whenever feasible, involve low-income senior adults aged 75 and over;
  • Engage senior adults in positive leadership roles and productive community activities; and
  • Be completed by 31 December 2012.

A total of $500 will be awarded for the Mally grant in 2012; agencies may apply for up to $500 each. Agencies are encouraged to plan in collaboration, whenever possible, to maximize the number of people benefiting from the educational experience.

No project will be funded more than twice. Funds may not be used to supplant existing Dane County funding. Grant applications must be received by Monday, 16 April 2012, 4p.m. by submitting applications at the Area Agency on Aging, 2306 S. Park St. Madison WI 53713. Grant applications are available below or by calling 608-261-9930.

Henry Norman Leck Endowment Fund

Early in 1995, Dane County elders and the Area Agency on Aging Board were privileged to receive a bequest from the estate of Mr. Henry Norman Leck. Mr. Leck, killed in a car accident in 1992, left over $150,000 to service Dane County elders. Realizing how quickly these funds could be spent, the Area Agency on Aging Board chose to create the Henry Norman Leck Endowment Fund at the Madison Community Foundation. Each spring, approximately 5% of the assets of the fund will be distributed, on a competitive basis, to Dane County non-profit organizations, community groups, and public agencies serving senior adults age 60 and older. The grants are meant to provide seed money to develop peer-to-peer prevention programs in the areas of AODA, elder abuse, housing, and nutrition. Funds may not be used to supplant existing county funding.

The Area Agency on Aging Board has defined prevention as: a process which promotes physical and emotional health by empowering persons with the resources and services necessary to confront complex, stressful life conditions and by enabling individuals to lead personally satisfying and enriching lives.
