Under the umbrella of Safe Communities
, a Falls Prevention Task Force made up of representatives of clinics, hospitals, senior centers, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists, home health agency staff, occupational therapists, fitness instructors, social workers, Information and Assistance providers, medical equipment providers, physicians, etc. meet monthly and form work groups to expand Dane County's capacity to prevent injury and deaths through falls.
Take a personal check of these things to prevent falls:
- Vision
- Home Safety
- Medications
- Flexibility, Strength, and Balance activity and training
Programs for strength, flexibility, and balance are offered throughout Dane County. These include:
- No Falls,
- Tai Chi, and
- Balancing Act.
Stepping On is a 7-week program that meets two hours every week to build confidence and reduce falls. Topics discussed include vision, home safety, medications, ways to stay safe when out and about, and what to look for in safe footwear. Simple and fun, but progressive balance and strength training occurs at each session. Participants have discussion and develop action plans to prevent falls and to promote independence.
See the Safe Communities website
for times and locations of balance and strength training opportunities and Stepping On workshops.
